Areas we cover

We collect beds and mattresses across the whole city and the surrounding area.

Central and waterfront: city centre, Ocean Village, Chapel, Northam, Newtown, the Polygon, Bedford Place and Woolston. North and east: Portswood, Highfield, Swaythling, St Denys, Bevois Valley, Bevois Mount, Bitterne, Bitterne Park, Townhill Park, Harefield, Sholing, Peartree and Thornhill. West and north west: Freemantle, Shirley, Shirley Warren, Inner Avenue, Bassett, Millbrook, Redbridge, Maybush, Coxford, Lordshill and Weston. Around the city: Eastleigh, Chandler’s Ford, West End, Hedge End, Botley, Bursledon, Netley, Hamble, Totton, Marchwood, Hythe and the Waterside, and out towards Romsey and Winchester.

If you are just outside this list it is still worth asking. Hampshire is our home patch, so most Southampton collections are handled by teams who already know the area.

Why choose Zero Waste Group

We take mattresses of any size, divan bases including drawer divans, bed frames, wooden and metal, headboards, slats and bases, mattress toppers and protectors, cots, bunks and children’s beds. If the bed needs dismantling to get it out, say so when you book, because that is work as well as loading and it is better priced in at the start.

Mattresses are worth recovering rather than burying. Broken down properly, the steel springs go for metal recycling and the foam, felt, fibre and timber are recovered separately. Across our operations we divert around 99% of what we collect away from landfill, through authorised waste management routes.

Zero Waste Group is a licensed waste carrier, registration CBDU323204. You receive a waste transfer note where one is required, a receipted invoice, and a job card with before and after photographs of the collection.

What happens to your mattress

Mattresses are bulky, slow to break down and awkward to landfill, which is why they are worth taking apart properly. Sent for processing, a mattress is separated into its component materials: the steel springs go for metal recycling, and the foam, felt, fibre and textile layers are recovered separately. Divan bases yield timber and fabric alongside the metalwork.

Across our operations, around 99% of the waste we collect is diverted from landfill through authorised waste management routes, including reuse, recycling, material recovery and energy recovery. Where an item is in good enough condition to be used again, we set it aside for reuse or donation rather than breaking it up, though second-hand mattresses are an exception, and the reasons for that are covered in our FAQs.

You receive a waste transfer note recording what was collected, when, by whom and under which licence, along with a receipted invoice and photographs of the collection. Zero Waste Group is a licensed waste carrier, registration CBDU323204, and you can check that on the Environment Agency’s public register.

Other services we offer

Bed and mattress collection across Southampton

The student and rental belt. Portswood, Highfield, Swaythling, St Denys, Bevois Valley, Bevois Mount and the Polygon. Mattress turnover here is heavy and seasonal, and June and July bring whole houses changing over at once. We regularly collect four or five mattresses from a single HMO in one visit, work to checkout dates for landlords and agents, and can take access through the agent so nobody has to be there.

The Victorian terraces. Freemantle, Shirley, Inner Avenue, Newtown and Northam. The problem here is rarely the mattress and almost always the staircase: a double will not turn on a tight half landing without being bent, and a divan base often will not turn at all. Tell us the size and which floor it is on when you book, because a base that has to come apart on the landing is a different job from one that walks straight out.

Flats and upper floors. Ocean Village, the city centre, Chapel, Woolston and the newer blocks along the waterfront. Lifts, service lifts, key fobs and concierge access all shape the job, so tell us how the building is entered and whether a lift needs booking with the managing agent.

The wider city. Bitterne, Bitterne Park, Sholing, Thornhill, Peartree, Woolston, Harefield, Townhill Park, Bassett, Swaythling, Millbrook, Redbridge, Maybush, Lordshill, Coxford, Shirley Warren and Weston.
Beyond the city. Eastleigh, Chandler’s Ford, West End, Hedge End, Botley, Bursledon, Netley, Hamble, Totton, Marchwood, Hythe and the Waterside, and out towards Romsey and Winchester.

We work across Hampshire and this is our home patch, so most Southampton collections are handled by teams who know the streets rather than a subcontractor sent down for the day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are a few frequently asked questions we receive regarding our waste removal services.

  • Can I just leave the mattress outside for you?

You can, but there are two things worth knowing. A mattress left out overnight in Southampton will usually be wet by morning, and a soaked mattress is significantly heavier to carry and harder to process, so it is better left inside until the day. More importantly, if it sits on a pavement, a verge, a shared forecourt or a communal bin store while it waits, that is fly-tipping, and the liability sits with whoever put it there rather than with the person collecting it later. We collect from the room the mattress is in, so there is no need to move it out at all. If the property is empty and you want it left in a garage, a hallway or a porch, that is fine, just tell us where and how we get in.

  • Why can't the mattress go to a charity shop or be donated?

It is the fire safety labelling. Second-hand mattresses and upholstered furniture can only be resold or passed on if they carry the permanent label showing they meet the relevant fire safety regulations, and on a mattress that has been in use for years the label has usually gone, faded or been cut off. Without it, charities and reuse organisations cannot legally accept the item, however good its condition looks. That is not them being difficult, and it is why a mattress goes for material recovery rather than reuse: the springs to metal recycling, the foam, fibre and textiles recovered separately. Bed frames and headboards are different, and where those are in good condition they can be passed on.

  • We're clearing a student house and there are five mattresses. Can you take them all at once?

Yes, and June and July are our busiest weeks for exactly that around Portswood, Highfield, Swaythling and St Denys. Multiple mattresses, divans and frames from one property are a single booking rather than five, which is usually cheaper and always simpler. If you are a landlord or letting agent, you do not need to be there: we can take access through you or your agent, work to the checkout date, and email the transfer note, the invoice and the photographs straight through for the file. Book early in the changeover period if you can, since the last fortnight of June fills up.

  • The mattress is on the second floor of a terrace and I don't think it will come down the stairs. What happens?

It usually will, but it depends on the staircase rather than the mattress. The Victorian terraces around Freemantle, Shirley, Inner Avenue and Bevois Valley often have a tight half landing and a narrow turn at the top, which is manageable for a mattress because it flexes, and much harder for a rigid divan base, particularly a drawer divan. Tell us the mattress size, which floor it is on and whether the base is a divan or a slatted frame when you book. If a divan needs splitting to get it out, we can do that, but it is work as well as loading and it is better priced in at the start than discovered on the landing.
