What happens to your mattress

A mattress is one of the few items that is genuinely awkward for the waste system rather than just for you. It does not compress, it springs back under weight, and the steel in it does not sit well with equipment designed for compacting general waste. That is why mattresses are handled as a separate stream rather than thrown in with everything else, and why most routes that would take a bag of household rubbish will not take a bed.

Processed properly, a mattress comes apart into its materials. The steel springs go for metal recycling. The foam, felt, fibre and textile layers are separated and recovered. Divan bases give up timber and fabric alongside the metalwork. Frames, headboards and slats are largely timber and metal and are straightforward by comparison.

Across our operations, around 99% of the waste we collect is diverted from landfill through authorised waste management routes, including reuse, recycling, material recovery and energy recovery. Where an item can be used again we set it aside for reuse or donation rather than breaking it up. Mattresses are the exception, for reasons covered in our FAQs, but bed frames and headboards in good condition can often be passed on.

Bulk and trade collections in Winchester

Replacing beds across a whole floor or a whole site is a different job from clearing one bedroom, and it is one we do regularly for hotels, guest houses, care homes, student accommodation, letting agents and landlords across Winchester.

How it works. Tell us the number of items, the building and the window you need it done in. For a refurbishment we can work in stages, taking out the old beds ahead of or alongside a delivery of new ones so rooms are not out of use longer than they need to be. Larger jobs run over several loads and can be scheduled across consecutive days.

Timing around a working building. Hotels and care homes rarely want a clearance crew in a corridor at eleven in the morning. We can work to early starts, quiet periods or days when occupancy is low, and coordinate with a housekeeping or maintenance manager rather than a general enquiry line.

Access and back of house. For city centre premises, the loading window matters as much as the crew size, particularly around the pedestrianised streets and the timed access restrictions in the centre. Service lifts, back stairs, loading bays and out-of-hours access all need agreeing in advance. Tell us what the route out looks like and who holds the keys.

Paperwork for business waste. Waste from a hotel, care home, hall of residence or managed property is commercial waste in law, and the duty of care obligations are stricter than for a household. You receive a waste transfer note for the collection, and for regular scheduled collections of the same waste a single transfer note can cover repeated transfers for up to twelve months. Businesses are required to keep those records for two years and produce them on request. We can invoice on account and against a purchase order where that suits your finance process.

Beds from a care setting. Tell us in advance if any mattresses are soiled or have been in use with infection control precautions in place, because those may need to be handled and routed differently from a standard collection. It is much easier to arrange at the quote stage than on the day.
