Bin collections for properties with nowhere to put a bin

If you run a business in Canterbury, your waste is classed as commercial waste and it cannot legally go out with household collections. You have a duty of care to store it properly, hand it to an authorised carrier and make sure it reaches a permitted site. A private bin collection covers all of that in one arrangement.

We work with cafés and restaurants around the King’s Mile and Palace Street, pubs and bars in the centre, independent shops on the High Street and Burgate, offices, salons, guest houses and holiday lets, letting agents and student landlords, and units on the Vauxhall Road and Broad Oak estates and out at Lakesview in Hersden. We also arrange private bins for households who need more capacity than the council service provides, or who are dealing with a clearance, a renovation or a period of heavy turnover in a rental property.

How we can help

  • 240 litre wheelie bins for smaller premises, offices and flats above shops
  • 660 and 1100 litre bins for busier kitchens, bars and multi-unit sites
  • Separate mixed recycling collections
  • Cardboard, which is usually the biggest volume issue for retail units
  • Glass collections, which matter for the pubs, restaurants and bars in and around the centre
  • Food waste collections for kitchens and catering premises
  • General waste for anything that cannot be separated at source
  • Sacks where a property has no realistic room to store a bin, which is common in the older buildings inside the walls

Other services we offer

If you’re in a Canterbury postcode, our team can reach you.

Reuse, recycling and authorised disposal

Everything we collect goes through authorised waste management routes to permitted facilities. Recyclable material is separated and recovered where possible, reusable items are prioritised where they are suitable for reuse, and we work to keep unnecessary landfill down. Across our operations we currently divert around 99% of collected material from landfill.

We will not tell you that nothing ever reaches landfill. Some material genuinely cannot be recovered. What we will do is make sure it is handled legally and documented properly, and that everything capable of being recycled or reused is dealt with that way first.

Working around access in Canterbury

Canterbury is not a straightforward city to collect from, and pretending otherwise leads to missed collections. The pedestrianised core has timed vehicle access and rising bollards, so anything on St Peter’s Street, the High Street or Mercery Lane has to be worked into the permitted window rather than fitted in whenever a lorry happens to be nearby. The Westgate and the older lanes running off the main streets limit vehicle size.

Many premises are listed or sit in the conservation area, with bins tucked into shared courtyards, back alleys or narrow side passages rather than a kerbside store. Ring road congestion and the school run around the Simon Langton schools and King’s affect timings on some routes.

We plan collections around all of this, and we will tell you honestly at the survey stage if a particular slot or bin size is not going to work at your address.

Who’s behind the service?

Zero Waste Group was formed in 2018 from the merger of two established clearance businesses, and Canterbury has been part of our patch from the start.

The company is led by Edward Cain and Michael Miller: Ed has worked in recycling and reuse since 2009, and Michael founded his first waste clearance business in 2016. Together they lead a professional, down-to-earth team with over 30,000 completed jobs across the south of England. Find out more here.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Do we need to be there when you collect?

No. Once the presentation point is agreed, collections run without anyone needing to be on site. For premises where bins are behind a gate or in a shared courtyard, we agree access arrangements at the survey stage so the round is not held up.

  • What happens if our bin is blocked or we miss a presentation time?

Tell us as early as you can and we will look at fitting you in elsewhere on the round. In the pedestrianised streets that is harder, because the vehicle access window is fixed, so a missed presentation there usually means waiting for the next scheduled collection.

  • Can you supply extra capacity for a short period?

Yes. Temporary additional bins or a short run of extra collections can be arranged for refits, seasonal peaks, tenancy changeovers or a clearance running alongside your regular service.

  • What actually happens to what you collect?

It goes to permitted facilities through authorised waste management routes, with recyclable material separated and recovered where possible and reuse prioritised where items are suitable. Across our operations we divert around 99% of collected material from landfill. Anything that cannot be recovered is still handled legally and documented.

We reuse, recycle, and donate!
