Reuse, recycling and authorised disposal

Everything we collect goes through authorised waste management routes to permitted facilities. Recyclable material is separated and recovered where possible, reusable items are prioritised where they are suitable for reuse, and we work to keep unnecessary landfill down. Across our operations we currently divert around 99% of collected material from landfill.

We will not tell you that nothing ever reaches landfill. Some material genuinely cannot be recovered. What we will do is make sure it is handled legally and documented properly, and that everything capable of being recycled or reused is dealt with that way first.

We turn up on the agreed day and tell you promptly if anything changes. We size the service to the premises instead of pushing a standard package, and we handle both commercial contracts and one off domestic requirements, so you are not dealing with two suppliers when a clearance comes up alongside your regular bins.

Who’s behind the service? 

Zero Waste Group was formed in 2018 from the merger of two established clearance businesses, and Oxford has been part of our patch from the start.

The company is led by Edward Cain and Michael Miller: Ed has worked in recycling and reuse since 2009, and Michael founded his first waste clearance business in 2016. Working around access in Oxford

Oxford has more restrictions on vehicle movement than almost anywhere else we collect from, and ignoring them leads to missed collections.

The Zero Emission Zone covers several central streets, which affects which vehicles can enter and when, and charges apply to non-compliant vehicles. Bus gates and traffic filters on key routes mean the obvious way to an address is often not a legal one, and collections have to be routed accordingly. In East Oxford the low traffic neighbourhood filters around the Divinity Road and St Mary’s areas change how residential and mixed-use streets are reached. Add the lanes off the High Street, Turl Street and Magpie Lane, listed and college-owned buildings with bins in shared quads, courtyards or back passages rather than a kerbside store, and the Covered Market’s tight servicing windows, and routing genuinely matters here.

Ring road and Botley Road congestion affects timings, and low-lying premises around Osney and Botley can be harder to reach in wet spells.
