Responsible private bin collection in Swindon

Private bin collection is a scheduled service. We deliver wheeled bins to your premises, collect them on a fixed day each week or fortnight, and provide the paperwork that shows the waste was handled legally. It suits businesses that cannot use household collections, landlords and managing agents responsible for shared bin stores, and premises producing more waste than a council round is set up to take.

Business waste is not household waste, and the rules are different

If your premises produce waste, that waste is commercial waste in law, whatever it looks like. It cannot go in a household bin, it cannot go to a household waste recycling centre, and taking it home to put out with your own rubbish is not permitted either. Under section 34 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990 you have a duty of care to make sure it is transferred to a registered carrier and to keep a written record of that transfer.

This catches out more Swindon businesses than you would expect. A unit on Dorcan, Cheney Manor or Groundwell, a shop in the Brunel Centre or on Regent Street, a restaurant on Wood Street or Devizes Road in Old Town, a salon, a dental practice, a garage on Manchester Road: all of them need a commercial arrangement, and none of them can rely on the bin the previous tenant left in the yard.

Other services we offer

If you’re in a Swindon postcode, our team can reach you.

What we can collect

General commercial waste, mixed dry recyclables including paper, card, plastic, metal and glass, and food waste. Cardboard volume is the usual reason a retail or trade unit needs a bigger container than expected, and it catches out the Brunel Centre and Regent Street shops in particular.
Some material cannot go in a wheeled bin: hazardous waste, chemicals, clinical and sharps waste, asbestos, batteries, fluorescent tubes, gas bottles, fuel and tyres. Electrical equipment falls under separate WEEE requirements. If you produce any of it, tell us and we will point you to the right route.

Why choose Zero Waste Group

We are a licensed waste carrier, registration CBDU323204, and we provide waste transfer documentation as standard rather than on request. We turn up on the agreed day and tell you promptly if anything changes. We size the service to the premises instead of pushing a standard package, which matters in Old Town where restaurants and bars in converted period buildings have almost no room to store bins between collections. We handle both commercial contracts and one off domestic requirements, so you are not dealing with two suppliers when a clearance comes up alongside your regular bins.

Who’s behind the service?

Zero Waste Group was formed in 2018 from the merger of two established clearance businesses, and Swindon has been part of our patch from the start.

The company is led by Edward Cain and Michael Miller: Ed has worked in recycling and reuse since 2009, and Michael founded his first waste clearance business in 2016. Together they lead a professional, down-to-earth team with over 30,000 completed jobs across the south of England. Find out more here.

Access, bin stores and the practical side

Swindon’s layout throws up a few recurring problems and it is worth raising them at the quote stage.
Old Town is the main one. Wood Street and Devizes Road are lined with restaurants, bars and independent shops in converted period buildings, most with no rear yard at all, so bins are stored in shared alleys or brought out to the kerb within a set window. Tell us the arrangement your premises works to.

Flats and shared houses across Park North, Park South, Walcot, Pinehurst and the terraces in Ferndale and Gorse Hill often use communal bin stores with a locked door, a narrow approach or a step at the threshold. Tell us how the store is accessed and who holds the key.

The newer estates at Haydon Wick, Abbey Meads, Priory Vale and Wichelstowe have shared parking courts and restricted access roads, which affects the vehicle we send and where it can turn.

Units on Dorcan, Cheney Manor and Groundwell frequently share a service yard with neighbouring businesses, so bin position and turning space matter more than the bin size does.

Paperwork and compliance

Zero Waste Group is a licensed waste carrier, registration CBDU323204, and you can check that on the Environment Agency’s public register.

For regular collections of the same waste from the same premises, a single waste transfer note can cover repeated transfers rather than a fresh document every week. Businesses are required to keep transfer notes for two years and to produce them on request. Keeping them is your obligation, not ours, but issuing them properly is.

We don’t just offer private bin collections in Swindon

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Can you collect from an Old Town premises with no rear yard?

Yes. A lot of the restaurants, bars and shops on Wood Street and Devizes Road are in converted period buildings with no service yard, so bins are kept in a shared alley or brought out to the kerb within a set window. Tell us the arrangement your premises works to, along with any gate or key code, and we will build the round around it. Worth sorting before the first collection rather than discovering it on the day.

  • I only produce a couple of bags a week. Do I still need a commercial arrangement?

Yes. Volume makes no difference in law. If waste comes from your business premises it is commercial waste, it cannot go in a household bin or to a household waste recycling centre, and you have a duty of care to transfer it to a registered carrier and keep a record. Small offices, salons and one-room units on the neighbourhood parades around Stratton, Covingham and Freshbrook are the ones this catches most often.

  • Can you collect from a unit that shares a yard with other businesses?

Yes, and it is the usual arrangement on Dorcan, Cheney Manor and Groundwell. Where a yard is shared, bin position and turning space matter more than the bin size does, so tell us where your bins sit and how a vehicle gets in and out. If the yard is managed, it is worth checking whether the landlord or managing agent needs to approve the arrangement before we start.

  • What paperwork do I get, and how long do I keep it?

You get waste transfer documentation as standard rather than on request. For regular collections of the same waste from the same premises, a single transfer note can cover repeated transfers rather than a new document every week. Businesses are required to keep transfer notes for two years and produce them on request. Our licence number is CBDU323204 and you can check it on the Environment Agency’s public register.
