Bin collections for properties with nowhere to put a bin
Winchester has a storage problem before it has a waste problem. Across the historic centre, Kingsgate Street, Colebrook Street, St Thomas Street and much of Hyde, front doors open straight onto the pavement, there is no side passage, and a listed frontage in a conservation area is not somewhere a wheeled bin can sensibly live. So the bin sits in a hallway, or in a shared yard three doors down, or on the street where it is not supposed to be. When a round is missed, or a household produces more than the allocation was sized for, there is nowhere for the overflow to go and it is visible to everyone.

Who books a private bin collection in Winchester?
- The listed frontage with nowhere to store anything. Terraces in Hyde, Fulflood and the streets below the cathedral open onto the pavement with no rear access and no room at the front. Bins end up indoors, in a shared passage or out on the street, and once bags start going beside them it is a conservation area frontage they are sitting against. We collect on demand, so the overflow does not have to wait for the next round.
- The student changeover. University of Winchester lets fill the streets around West Hill, Bereweeke, Stanmore and Fulflood, and every June the bins lose. Landlords and agents book scheduled top-up collections through term time and a one-off clearout at changeover, so a property is not greeting its first viewing of the summer with an overflowing bin and abandoned furniture beside it.
- Hospitality with no back door. Cafés, restaurants and shops on the High Street, The Square, Jewry Street and Parchment Street are servicing through the front within a timed access window, with no rear yard to stage waste in. Add the visitor peaks, the Christmas market weeks in particular, and a fixed round sized for a quiet Tuesday is no use. - No car, or no time to queue. A tip run means getting to Bar End and joining the queue with everyone else who had the same Saturday morning idea, assuming what you are carrying is accepted and you are not in a van. For city centre flats with a shared store, households without a vehicle, and anyone whose waste has outgrown the fortnight, a booked collection is the easier answer.
