About Zero Waste Group

Zero Waste Group was formed in 2018 when two established clearance businesses merged. Edward Cain has worked in recycling since 2009, and Michael Miller has run rubbish removal companies since 2016. What happens to the waste after collection

Everything we collect in Reading is taken to a licensed waste transfer station and sorted rather than tipped as mixed waste. Timber, metal, cardboard, plastics and green waste are separated for recycling. Furniture, appliances and household items in usable condition are set aside for reuse or donation where a suitable route exists.

Across our operations, around 99% of the waste we collect is diverted from landfill. That is an average across all the collections we carry out rather than a figure for any single job, and how much of a particular load can be recycled depends on what is in it and what condition it is in.

Some materials have to be handled under specific rules. Fridges and freezers contain gases that must be removed before the unit is processed. Upholstered seating such as sofas and armchairs is subject to controls on persistent organic pollutants, which means most of it has to go for incineration rather than reuse, and we will tell you when that applies to something we are collecting rather than implying it will find a second home.

You can check that registration yourself on the Environment Agency’s public register before you book, and we would encourage you to do the same with anyone else you are considering.

After every collection we send you a waste transfer note recording what was removed and where it went. If you are a business, that document is what your duty of care under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 requires you to hold. If you are a householder, it is your evidence that the waste left your property legally, which matters because householders can be fined if their waste is later fly-tipped by an unlicensed carrier.

    It depends where you are and what you have. Reading Borough Council, Wokingham and West Berkshire all run their own chargeable bulky waste services with different charges and item limits, so check yours first if you have two or three things you can get to the kerb. Our service makes more sense when there is more than a few items, when nothing can be moved outside, or when you need a specific date rather than a queue position.

  • How to dispose of garden waste in Reading?

    You can take green waste to a household waste recycling centre, though vans and trailers usually need a permit and you may need to book. Reading Borough Council also runs a subscription garden waste collection for wheelie bins. If you have more than fits in a car, or nowhere to load it from, we collect green waste directly, including hedge cuttings, turf, soil, decking, fence panels and shed timber.
